We will solve (3) and (4) by the substitution method. Frm (3), b = y₁ - mx₁. Substituting this in (4):

y₂ = mx₂ + y₁ - mx₁

Subtracting y₁ from both sides,

y₂ - y₁ = mx₂ - mx₁

Taking m as common factor on the right side,

y₂ - y₁ = m(x₂ - x₁)

Dividing both sides by x₂ - x₁,

m = (y₂ - y₁) / (x₂ - x₁)
