DNA likelihood ratiosA jurors perceptionDNA source likelihood ratios are expressed in numerical form such as “100 billion times more likely….”Significant scientific working groups support the use of verbal equivalents to assist the jury with understanding the relative strength of that numerical evaluation. This may be expressed as “very strong support” etc.A jurors comprehension of likelihood ratios and their verbal equivalents is of critical relevance.Sadly, we largely do not know what jurors take from likelihood ratios, nor the relationship between the numbers and the verbal equivalents. What does a juror think of a likelihood ratio of say 1000?What alternatively might a juror think of a likelihood ratio of 10?If a juror heard “moderate support”, might they find it significantly different to "weak support" ?Scientifically, any number under a 1000 is a red flag as to the potential for a false inclusion, and such a profile certainly warrants interrogation of the analysis.Various labs in Australia cite differing material in support of their verbal equivalents. In the ACT, the AFP evidence that a likelihood ratio of 10 is “moderate” support.10 = Moderate – Australian Federal Police10 = Limited - Scientific Working Group for DNA Analysis Methods (SWGDAM)10 = weak - European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENSFI)10 = slight – Biology Scientific Advisory Group (BSAG)Criminal justice would benefit greatly from significant further research into jury comprehension regarding likelihood ratios and verbal equivalents. My expert opinion is that a likelihood ratio of 10 is slight or weak support, on the caveat that the analysis has been verified to establish that it is not a false inclusion.

🔬 Forensic Science Breakthrough: Microbial Evidence Revolutionizes Time of Death Determination! 🔍🕰️Exciting news from Colorado State University reveals a groundbreaking discovery in forensic science: microbial evidence now plays a pivotal role in precisely identifying the time of death. This transformative research, published in Nature Microbiology, unveils a network of 20 microbes that drive the decomposition of animal flesh, offering investigators a more accurate way to determine when a body died.Led by senior author Jessica Metcalf, researchers conducted an extensive study involving the decomposition of 36 cadavers across diverse environments and climates. Through meticulous molecular and genomic analysis, they mapped the microbiome present during decomposition, uncovering a consistent set of specialized decomposing microbes present on all bodies. This discovery opens new avenues for ecological research and enhances our understanding of decomposition dynamics. What makes this discovery truly remarkable is its potential impact on forensic investigations. By leveraging machine learning techniques, researchers developed a tool capable of accurately predicting the postmortem interval—the time since death. Co-author David Carter highlights the reliability of microbial evidence in death investigations, emphasizing its consistency compared to other physical evidence. The ability to determine the time of death with precision is paramount in forensic science, aiding in victim identification, suspect apprehension, and alibi validation. This breakthrough holds immense significance for law enforcement agencies worldwide, offering a more reliable and scientifically rigorous approach to death investigations. As we continue to push the boundaries of forensic science, advancements like these underscore the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in unraveling the mysteries of the human body and the natural world. Stay tuned as we witness the transformative impact of microbial evidence on the future of forensic science! 🔬🌟 #ForensicScience #MicrobialEvidence #TimeOfDeath #Innovation #ResearchBreakthrough
