If you are new to pressure cooking we have a lot of easy one pot meal recipes for you here. To begin with let’s start with a few basic tips:

  • Make sure to Bookmark our InstaPot recipes page. We add new ones each week!
  • Then PRINT this —–> Instant Pot cooking times cheat sheet that will help you understand how long meat, vegetables and beans take to cook in your pressure cooker.
  • I HIGHLY recommend you buy this non stick pot.
    • You should still deglaze pressure cooker after sautéing but it won’t have as many issues with this better liner.

For reference, this is the pressure cooker I have (a 6 quart) and use for all recipe creations.

Instant Pot Cabbage and Sausage

We made a batch of Crockpot cabbage and sausage with potatoes before and it was a hit. This time I thought noodles would be fun to try instead of the other starch. You could use kielbasa sliced into dials instead of ground like we did here too as another option.

Biggest tip to this cooking well is to ensure that your pasta is submerged into the liquid below as much as possible. That way it will become tender the way you want it to.

Pressure Cooker Cabbage and Sausage

My Grandma ate a lot of it I tell you! As a child I wasn’t so sure but once I got this “magical all in one appliance” I got hooked too when I made this pressure cooker fried cabbage recipe.

It was based off hers written on a piece of paper that of course she cooked on her stovetop for years upon years. I adapted it to be made in my Instant Pot and it was a hit with everyone! SO, I just kept going with this Instant Pot cabbage and sausage recipe here.

Ninja Foodi Sausage and Cabbage

It’s quite simple really, and you only need a few ingredients to make it. Just like our Ninja Foodi cabbage that is simple with just some salt and pepper, you’ll need about 1/2 a head total.

  1. Pressure cooker
    1. if you have an Instant Pot I HIGHLY recommend getting a non stick pot
  2. Cabbage
  3. Ground sausage – we prefer 1/2 spicy Jimmy Dean and 1/2 regular
  4. Can of diced tomatoes
  5. Noodles – we used these but any small style would work, optional
  6. Broth – vegetable was what I had but beef or chicken would be fine too
  7. Garlic – minced, jarred
  8. Onion – diced

From start to finish this will take you under 30 minutes to make perfectly cooked cabbage and sausage with noodles.

Sausage and Cabbage in Instant Pot

Here are the basic steps: First you’ll want to prep everything which just means you’ll have to dice your onions and cut cabbage into 1″ squares. Everything else is done! Could you use sausage links sliced instead of ground sausage?

  • Yes you could.
  • I would just eliminate the first step of sauteeing the meat since those are already precooked.
  • Then set your pot to saute and add your olive oil, onions, garlic and sausage.
  • Cook until meat is no longer pink, then turn pot off.
  • Pour in your can of diced tomatoes and stir. Spread on bottom of pot.
  • Add your noodles across the top of this.
  • Now pour your broth on your noodles and sprinkle your cabbage leaves on the very top.
    • You can add any seasonings you’d like on the very top now.
    • Using spicy sausage has a ton of flavor so we don’t need anything with this.
  • Close and lock the lid.
  • Set to high pressure for 4 minutes. After pressure cooking is done do a quick release.
    • The larger the noodles the more time needed. Butter noodles or small sizes would need 3 minutes.

So if you were asking what can I do with a head of cabbage before, I hope we gave you a few ideas! How long is cabbage good for?

  • Try not to damage or bruise of your cabbages.
  • This can lead to it not lasting as long as it degrades the vitamin C content.
  • If cabbage is properly stored it can last from 3 weeks to up to 2 months in your refrigerator.
  • The other half of this cabbage though should be stored in an air tight freezer bag or container until you use it.
    • Once cut it will only last a few days without turning brown on the cut end and starting to break down.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1/2 head cabbage cut into cubes, 2’x2′ pcs
  • 1 lb ground sausage I use half pound of Italian, 1/2 lb of spicy sausage
  • 1/2 onion sliced or diced
  • 1 tbsp garlic minced
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 2 c noodles uncooked, we used mostaccioli
  • 1.5 c broth vegetable is what we used, if not adding noodles only use 3/4 c.
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  • Turn your pressure cooker to saute and add olive oil, sausage and diced onions.

  • Cook until sausage is no longer pink, then add garlic and mix together. Turn pot OFF and scrape bottom of pot to deglaze (can add a bit of your broth to make sure you get all bits off).

  • Add can of diced tomatoes and mix. Spread out on bottom of pot.

  • Add uncooked noodles to the top of that and do NOT mix. Pour your broth on top of your noodles. Put cubed / broken up cabbage leaves on the very top. Can omit noodles entirely if you don't want them, if not using noodles decrease broth to 3/4 c.

  • Close lid and steam valve and set to manual high pressure for 3 minutes.

  • Do a quick release, then stir contents if you've added noodles so they are mixed in well. Put lid back on and allow to sit for 3-5 minutes before serving so noodles soften a bit more mixed in.

  • Enjoy…great with some parmesan cheese on top!
