Why Do So Many People Have The Same FalseMemories?

This post answers questions for The Council from an anonymous reader about false memories.

Anonymous: Hello, Bob and Cynthia. I have a question about a phenomenon called, the Mandella Effect. Essentially the Mandella Effect is a widespread false memory that a large group of people believe. For example, there are a lot of people who remember Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s, but in our reality, Nelson Mandela died in 2013.

I vividly remember the actor, Sinbad, playing a genie in a movie from the 1990s called, Shazam, and there are many other people who have this memory, as well, but it turns out that this movie never existed. The actor himself has come out and said he’s never played a genie, or starred in a movie called, Shazaam, and is confused how so many people could have this false memory.

Bob’s Note: It turns out there was a 2019 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name called, Shazam!, that Sinbad did not appear in. Cynthia and I saw it on TV and thought it was amusing.

Anonymous: I also vividly remember, as a child, reading a book series called, The Bernenstein Bears, but now as an adult, I found out the series is actually called, Berenstain Bears, not Berenstein Bears.

I’ve also gone my entire life hearing people quote the famous line from Star Wars, “Luke, I am your father.” But it turns out the phrase was never uttered and the actual line from the movie has always been, ” No, I am your father.”

I am so confused. What is going on here? Why is it that so many people have these supposedly false memories? Are we genuinely misremembering all of these things, or is something else going on?

Council: What’s going on at this particular point where we are trying to expand, and discover more of who we are, and how powerful we are, and that we are the creators [of our reality] – many people have decided to see things one way and to have that memory, and other groups have another memory which is totally different, which should show you how we create what we live.

So there’s nothing sneaky going on about it. It’s just what we choose to create, and what we choose to experience. And then, at a certain point like now, the groups are finding out, “But that’s not the way I saw it. That’s not the way it was for me. That’s not the way I remember it.”

It’s not that you have stepped into another dimension, but this is what you choose to experience, and there are many different experiences. And so some groups see it one way, and other groups see it another way, and that’s all that’s going on. But learn from that. Learn how we can be here in the same reality and still experience different ways things are happening. And it’s to teach us to look further into these things. It is something to get your curiosity going, or the desire to learn more.

And so we say again, there is nothing sneaky or horrible going on, and no one is lying, and no one is seeing things that don’t exist. It all exists. It’s just what you chose to experience, and then how you chose to experience it that other people see it differently. And yet we are all here in this reality together.

Anonymous: Did two realities merge, and the portion of the population who remembers these “false memories” originate from the reality where these things actually happened, and we’re just remembering the past of that old reality?

Council: It’s not an old reality, and it’s not that realities have merged. It’s just certain people experience it one way, and other people experience it another way.

Anonymous: Or did somebody time-travel and accidentally change certain things in our reality?

Council: That’s a wonderful thought, but that’s not how it is [laughing]. Imagination is wonderful. It gets you to question.

Anonymous: Or are these genuinely just false memories and there’s nothing nefarious going on here?

Council: They are not false memories. They are different memories for different people, and they are very, very real memories.

Anonymous: I’m really interested to hear what you guys have to say. Thanks.

Council: And so, enjoy your creations and learn from what we teach. There’s always a way it will help you. And just asking the questions is showing that you are on another path to expand, to learn how to create, to look at yourself, to show kindness, and to bring in the happiness we all want. And so we say, have fun with this.
