Trivia[]

  • The initial motif of the symphony has sometimes been credited with symbolic significance as a representation of Fate knocking at the door. This idea comes from Beethoven's secretary and factotum Anton Schindler.
  • The key of the Fifth Symphony, C minor, is commonly regarded as a special key for Beethoven, specifically a "stormy, heroic tonality".
  • The symphony was played on the inaugural concerts of two prominent orchestras in the United States, the New York Philharmonic in 1842, and the National Symphony Orchestra in 1931.
  • It is widely considered one of the cornerstones of western music.
  • The symphony is the last track listed on the Little Einsteins Classical Collection soundtrack CD.

In popular culture[]

  • During World War II, the first four notes (short-short-short-long) of the symphony was a powerful symbol with the Allies as they corresponded to the morse code for the letter V, which means 'victory'.
  • This song was also used in 1999 for the premiere and in 2000 for the IMAX and theatrical releases of the Disney film, Fantasia 2000, alongside The Firebird Suite.
  • The song is among one of the few music by Beethoven (alongside the Cavatina movement from String Quartet No. 13) to be sent into outer space on the Voyager Golden Record, which is a phonograph record disc containing samples of images, sound effects, languages and music of Earth.
